STATION HISTORY:

CJGX went on the air on August 19th, 1927, licensed to Dawson Richards of the Winnipeg Grain Exchange.  The opening ceremonies featured a live seven piece orchestra and several singers all from the Yorkton area.

Daily programming from 8:00 a.m. consisted of area news and information, various clubs and associations meetings, births, anniversaries, deaths  -interspersed with music from the gramophone.  News was the biggest attraction like the news of Lindbergh's flight over the Atlantic.

The letters "GX" in the call sign reflect the Grain Exchange.  The Exchange seeking to reach farmers with the latest market prices from the Exchange in Winnipeg, and two reports were carried daily by use of a private line to Yorkton.  Prices fluctuated widely and farmers always waited to deliver to their grain elevator when the highest price was being paid.

In 1 934, Dawson Richardson assumed control of the station after the Canadian Wheat Board was formed to give some stability to grain prices, putting an end to conflict between the "Wheat Pool" and the Grain Exchange.

In 1936, James Richardson & Sons took over CJGX briefly, in order to reserve frequencies with their Regina and Winnipeg stations, then sold CJGX back to Dawson Richardson.

During the 1930's, the circulation of the daily newspapers In Saskatchewan dropped by nearly 75%, mostly due to the recession.  In 1 937, licensed radio receivers in the province more than doubled to about 40,000 homes. Radio was here to stay.

In 1939, CJGX became a locally owned station when a group of businessmen, headed by President F. K. Tully took over, obtained a power increase to 1,000 watts at 1 430 kc/s and appointed Leslie Garside as Manager.

In 1945, the station moved to 940 Mhz on the dial.

In 1957, fire destroyed the studios, and the staff operated out of temporary quarters while a new building was built.  Power was increased to 10,000 watts daytime.

1963 saw the station go to 10,000 watts day and night.  In 1991 with the installation of a new transmitter, daytime power was raised to 50,000 watts.

in 1966, Messrs. Tully, L. Ham, and several smaller shareholders, sold the station to George Gallagher, Ed Laurence and Merv Phillips - senior staff members.

In 1974 Gallagher and Laurence purchased Merv Phillips' shares.

In 1989 Gallagher purchased all of Ed Laurence's shares to become the sole owner.

In 1997, the GX RADIO PARTNERSHIP was formed, with Gallagher's
YORKTON BROADCASTING COMPANY joining with a company owned by Lyle
Walsh, GX94's General Manager.

Yorkton broadcasting sold the assets of Radio Station CJGX to this partnership, which was licensed by the
C. R.T.C. in December 1997.
