The Yorkton Chamber of Commerce is disappointed in the Supreme Court of Canada’s ruling that the federal carbon tax is constitutional.
In a news release, the Chamber is concerned about the tax’s impact on the local economy, saying it’s “costly to our business community and those rising costs with the tax will be transferred to the consumers.”
Chamber President Marty Sveinbjornson says “As the carbon tax leaves fewer dollars in the wallets of consumers, the consumers have fewer dollars to spend on local goods and services.”
He adds “the carbon tax “strains an already tough economy created by the pandemic.”
The 6-3 decision from the Supreme Court allows Ottawa to push ahead with its plan to ensure every province and territory has a price on carbon to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
While the is not for the tax they support the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce’s report on building a low carbon economy.
The report details 18 recommendations on how businesses can become less reliant on carbon while protecting the economy.
