Cargill Announces Construction of Canola Crushing Plant in Regina Will Begin in Early 2022

More canola is going to be crushed domestically in the future, and the Chair of SaskCanola says that’s positive for growers.

Bernie McLean commented on news that Cargill is going to build a 350-million dollar canola crushing plant in Regina.

“It actually bodes really well for getting us a step closer to the Canola Council of Canada’s goal of 14-million metric tonnes of crushed capacity in Canada by 2025. I think currently we’re around 10-million metric tonnes.” McLean said.

The Cargill plant in Regina will have an annual crush capacity of one million metric tonnes when it opens in 2024. Construction on the plant will begin early next year.

McLean says it shows confidence in the Saskatchewan canola industry.

“We produce 50 percent of the canola crop in Canada, so obviously there’s a desire to set up shop here in Saskatchewan,” he said. “I think it shows lots of confidence in the producers here in Saskatchewan.”
