Stampeders’ clinch playoff berth but fall on the road in Dauphin on Friday

The Swan Valley Stampeders dropped their 2nd to last regular season game on the season on Friday night, 7-3 to the Dauphin Kings.

The Kings struck first at the 6:54 mark of the 1st period as Nakodan Greyeyes beat a screened Kobe Grant for his 9th of the season to make it 1-0.

They made it 2-0 just under 8 minutes later as Jayden Jubenvill’s long stretch pass found Nick Braun behind the Stamps’ D and the rookie Kings’ forward finished it off for his 26th of the year.

The two teams exchanged late goals, just 15 second apart from Owen Wareham and Carter Cockburn (22nd of season for SV) to make it a 3-1 Dauphin lead through 1 period.

Brayden Dube gave the Kings their three goal lead back just 7:20 into the 2nd period with his 21st of the season to make it 4-1.

The Stamps’ quickly responded though as Darius Makse took a nice feed in front from Emile Pichette and made no mistake for his 3rd of season making it a 2 goal game.

Dauphin then broke the game open with 3 unanswered in the final 6:53 of the 2nd period off the sticks of Matthew Rathbone, Tanner Brouwer and Kaden Bryant to push the Kings lead to 7-2 through 40 minutes.

Swan Valley added the only goal in the 3rd on a power play goal from Callum Fortin but that’s as close as they would get.

Carson Cherepak made 29 saves on 32 shots to earn the win in the Kings’ goal, while Kobe Grant got the start for Swan made 26 saves on 33 shots before being relieved by Dylan Black in the 3rd who stopped all 5 shots he faced.

The Stampeders’ despite the loss, did clinch a MJHL Playoff spot with Neepawa’s 6-4 home loss to the Waywayseecappo Wolverines.

Swan Valley will face the Kings in round 1 of the Turnbull Cup Playoffs but the two teams wrap up their regular season series on Saturday night.
