The Manitoba government introduced legislation that would formally increase the province’s minimum wage to 15 dollars an hour by next October.
If passed, the Minimum Wage Adjustment Act would raise the minimum hourly wage to $14.15 on April 1st, 2023, then 15 dollars on October 1st, 2023.
Labour Minister Reg Helwer says this will provide some relief for low-income workers who are grappling with high inflation.
The wage was just bumped up to $13.50 last month.
The Manitoba government had already committed to increase the minimum to 15 dollars in August to deal with high costs of living.
However, groups like the Manitoba Federal of Labour have said the raise is not enough, and are calling for a minimum wage of $16.15 an hour immediately.
