GX94 continues to look back at the top news stories of 2022. On the second last day of the year, we look at the top story in October.

Long-time Yorkton broadcaster and radio station owner, George Gallagher, passed away in October at the age of 92.

Yorkton Mayor Mitch Hippsley says he was greatly respected in the industry, and outside it as well, and says it’s thanks to the generosity of the Gallagher family the city has prospered and grown.

On a personal note, Hippsley says he had plenty of interactions with Gallagher, noting it was a privilege to have known him.

Gallagher joined GX94 in October of 1947, as the morning announcer.

In 1950, he moved to Dauphin to help set up CKDM radio.

By 1957, Gallagher had returned to Yorkton, and in 1966, he bought GX94 with two other senior staff members.

In 1989, he became the sole owner of GX94, until he partnered with Lyle Walsh in 1997.

In 2001, he helped establish Fox FM radio in Yorkton.

He also owned CKRM Regina from 1970 to 1981, and CFQC Saskatoon from 1991 to 1994.

Gallagher was well-known for his editorial comments, which ran on GX94 until his retirement from radio.

The Gallagher Centre in Yorkton is named in his honor, due to his generous donations over the years.
