“Hard working”, “professional”, “inspirational” “a legend”. Just some of the words spoken about the life and legacy of former Riders running back George Reed.

A celebration of his life was held at the Viterra International Trade Centre in the REAL District.

On the stage, some of Reed’s memorabilia including the Grey Cup were on display for people to see.

There was a steady stream of tributes to Reed who died last weekend, just one day before his 84th birthday.

Premier Scott Moe and former premier Brad Wall were first to speak, followed by CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie. Ambrosie joked he was grateful to be asked to attend, considering he his from Winnipeg and a former Bomber fan.

The stories that were told covered Reed’s playing days, and the years that followed as Reed continued to be a pillar of the community through his many charitable commitments, his relationship with the Riders, and his work with the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation.

Reed was very close to Eric Johnson, the owner of “Smokin’ Oakies” for many years. Johnson said they shared a love of football, and of BBQ and beer, but mostly they enjoyed each other’s company. “We will miss you George” Johnson told the assembled mourners, “but you will always be in our hearts, and memories”.

“He was so proud to be a Roughrider” his daughter Georgette said, “one time when we were driving to Texas to visit my grandparents, people would see the license plate on the car and ask where Saskatchewan was. Was it somewhere across the ocean somewhere, they would ask. My dad would just smile and say, No, its in Canada. Its Saskatchewan, and I’m proud to be from there.”

The Riders will be honouring Reed before Saturday’s game against the Hamilton Tiger Cats. Fans are encouraged to get to their seats a little early. There will be tributes to Reed and the most recent inductees into the “Plaza of Honour” throughout the game as well.
