Ways To Keep The Kids Entertained Without an iPad

Hey there, parents! I hope you’re all doing well and staying strong in this chaotic world we live in. This past week, I was at the mechanic, waiting for my car to get fixed, when I noticed a mother and her child sitting beside me. The little one was engrossed in a TikTok, playing it on repeat, full volume, as if it were the most captivating thing in the world. It reminded me of when I was a kid growing up, not having anything even close to what kids have today!

Now, even though I’m not a parent, I totally sympathize with every parent out there who has experienced the struggle of keeping their kids busy during those mind-numbingly boring moments, desperately searching for ways to keep the little ones engaged and entertained. So today, I want to share some tried-and-true tips that worked wonders for me when I was a kid, and I believe they can work for your kids, even now!

  1. Books: Books are magical portals that transport us to far-off lands, spark our curiosity, and ignite our imagination. Introduce your child to the joy of reading by selecting age-appropriate books that align with their interests. Whether it’s a thrilling adventure, a heartwarming tale, or an educational book, reading will not only keep them engaged but also enhance their vocabulary and critical thinking skills.
  2. Card Games: A deck of cards can massively help. My mom always had a deck of cards in her purse, ready to go for a game of Go Fish! This timeless gem has been a favorite in households for decades, and for good reason. Not only is it incredibly easy to learn and play, but it also provides an invaluable opportunity for your child to develop crucial skills like numeracy, critical thinking, and social interaction. It’s a win-win situation!
  3. Colouring: A small Ziplock bag of crayons and a colouring book does wonders! Colouring sparks the imagination and creativity of young minds. By exploring different colours, shapes, and patterns, children develop their artistic skills and learn to express themselves in a visually captivating way. Moreover, colouring is an excellent tool for improving fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Remember, dear parents, keeping the kids entertained doesn’t have to be an arduous task. By introducing them to the joy of reading, engaging in card games, and encouraging colouring, we can ensure that those moments of boredom become opportunities for growth, learning, and endless fun.

I promise all these worked for little Olivia back in the mid 2000s.

So, the next time you find yourself in a waiting room or facing a dull moment, remember these tips and watch as your child’s eyes light up with excitement. Let’s empower the little ones to discover the beauty and wonders that surround them, turning every moment into an adventure.
