The Tale of My Five Yellow Cherry Tomatoes

Hey friends!

So, this year, I decided to try my hand at growing my own yellow cherry tomatoes (aka pear tomatoes). I had dreams of baskets overflowing with these sweet and mild tomatoes. Imagine all those salads, sharing my excess harvest with my friends, and considering all the possibilities of what else I could grow with my shiny new green thumb.

Well, let me tell you what really happened: after months of care, I ended up with a grand total of…five bite-sized tomatoes. Yep, just five. And yes, they were delicious, but I definitely expected a bit more from my plant.

This is all that grew the whole summer. I never knew how difficult it was going to be to grow tomatoes! -Olivia . . . #gardening #tomatoes #homegrowntomatoes #garden #harvest

Meanwhile, my mom’s garden was an absolute paradise this year! She managed to grow loads of tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers with ease. I swear, she could probably make bananas grow in Saskatchewan if she tried. And it doesn’t stop with my mom. My grandma was an outstanding gardener too. Her garden was like something out of a storybook, with rows of onions, cucumbers, rhubarb, raspberries, tomatoes, and the most fragrant wild dill that made her pickles legendary.

This is just SOME of my mom’s harvest!

Unfortunately, it seems the gardening gene skipped right over me. But you know what? I’m okay with that! It gives me the perfect excuse to visit and support my local farmer’s markets, which is always a treat. Plus, it’s a chance to connect with the wonderful community of growers who pour their love and effort into bringing fresh produce to our tables.

So, here’s to my five yellow cherry tomatoes. They may have been small in number, but they did give me a good laugh. And maybe with a bit more practice I’ll manage to grow six next year! In the meantime, I’ll be savoring the amazing finds from my local farmer’s market and enjoying every bite of the harvests I didn’t grow myself.

Happy gardening—or in my case, happy market browsing!

Still hoping to find a veggie that looks like a duck! One our listeners grew this, isn’t it cute?
