An RCMP officer has been charged with new criminal offences following an investigation into a high-speed traffic stop that escalated dangerously on August 29, 2023.
Cpl. Kevin Challoner, initially charged under the Highway Traffic Act for failing to drive with due regard for public safety, is now also charged with assault causing bodily harm and dangerous operation of a vehicle under the Criminal Code.
The incident occurred when officers attempted to stop a motorcyclist driving at excessive speeds on Provincial Trunk Highway 5. After several near-misses with other vehicles, the situation was brought under control with the help of additional police units.
The Independent Investigation Unit confirmed the updated charges following further review and declined further comment as the matter proceeds in court.
