Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is investigating the death of a man in custody at the Carlyle RCMP detachment.
Around 12:20 Friday morning, Mounties were called to a home on the White Bear First Nation on a report of an assault, where they found a seriously injured man and a woman with non-life-threatening injuries, and both were taken to hospital.
A 49-year-old man from the reserve was arrested at the scene and taken to the Carlyle detachment.
At about 9 a.m., an officer noticed the man was in medical distress, and Mounties began performing first aid until EMS personnel arrived, however, they pronounced the man dead.
The man’s family has been notified, and the SIRT will investigate the police interaction with the deceased while he was in custody and the circumstances of his death, while Carlyle RCMP will continue to investigate the initial assault complaint.
