On the final SaskAgToday.com Roundtable of 2024 with Chief Agricultural Editor of SaskAgToday.com Kevin Hursh, 620 CKRM AgriNews Director Ryan Young, and GX94 Agriculture Director Doug Falconer:

-The guys look back on notable events in agriculture that occurred in 2024, from labour disruptions along the supply chain, to concerns over tariffs, to year-end conversations with Provincial Agriculture Minister Daryl Harrison, CEO of the Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association Grant McLellan, and Acting President of the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities Bill Huber. They also shared what they’re looking forward to in 2025.

-Some news notes from Canada’s two major railways. CN Rail’s grain revenue was below its maximum grain revenue entitlement while CPKC’s revenue was above its respective entitlement. Regulations require CPKC to pay the amount exceeding its revenue entitlement for the year, in addition to a five per cent penalty. Several CPKC rail cars derailed into the Fraser River due to a rockslide and cleanup of the cars and grain is ongoing.

-Kevin shared observations from precipitation maps of Western Canada he recently looked at. He also recapped an interview with Maryse Bourgault, the Western Grains Research Foundation Chair in Integrated Agronomy at the University of Saskatchewan, regarding a study of cover crops and whether they’re beneficial in the Prairies.
