Cameco’s joint venture mining operation in Kazakhstan resumes

A joint venture mining operation in Kazakhstan that Saskatoon-based uranium mining company Cameco is involved with has resumed operations.

A brief news release from Cameco on Monday morning noted it was informed by its business partner, National Atomic Company Kazatomprom JSC (Kazatomprom) and Joint Venture Inkai (JV Inkai) that the Inkai operation has resumed production.

Production at the mine was suspended for more than three weeks due to JV Inkai not receiving an extension for its Uranium Development project due to a delay in submitting updated project documentation to the country’s Ministry of Energy. The process was expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

Cameco said earlier this month it was getting reports as recently as December 26 that made no mention of production being a risk in relation to this.

Both Cameco and Kazatomprom are working to determine the impact the suspension has on 2025 production plans.

Kazatomprom holds a 60 per cent share of JV Inkai while Cameco owns a 40 per cent share.
