Two Yorkton lawyers have been recognized for their dedication to providing free legal services to those in need. Rhiannon Montgomery and Kyla Eiffert, both from Kondratoff Persick LLP, received top honours from Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan (PBLS) for their volunteer efforts.
Montgomery was named the 2024 Volunteer of the Year for her consistent commitment to the Yorkton Free Legal Clinic. She has been volunteering with PBLS since 2015, providing legal assistance to individuals who may not have access to legal representation. “It’s part of our professional obligation to give back,” Montgomery said. “The work is rewarding, even though it can be challenging at times.”
Eiffert was awarded the Victor P. Dietz K.C. Pro Bono Service Award, recognizing her long-standing contributions to pro bono legal services. She has been volunteering with PBLS since 2014, even before Yorkton had a dedicated clinic. She emphasized the strong culture of volunteerism among Yorkton’s lawyers, noting that 28% of the city’s legal professionals contribute their time to PBLS.
The Yorkton Free Legal Clinic, where both lawyers volunteer, operates once or twice a month, offering free legal consultations on matters ranging from family law to criminal defense.
The awards will be presented on Feb. 8 in Regina, highlighting the crucial role of pro bono work in the legal community.
