With the Yorkton Terriers and Melville Millionaires set to face off in the first round of the SJHL Playoffs, it’s only fitting that a friendly wager has been placed between the cities’ mayors.
Melville’s Joe Kirwan and Yorkton’s Aaron Kienle will take part in the “Battle of the Mayors,” where the losing mayor must wear the opposing team’s jersey for an entire day—including during their next public council meeting.
Kienle is eager for the Parkland Region to experience the excitement of the series.
“When these two teams meet, it’s always a highlight for both communities,” said Kienle. “The atmosphere in the rinks will be electric, and we encourage fans to fill the stands and support their teams. Make sure to buy your tickets early—every game in this series is sure to be a sellout!”
Kirwan echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing how hockey unites communities.
“This bet is a fun way to show our support for the teams and their incredible fan bases,” said Kirwan. “May the best team win—but I have a feeling Yorkton’s mayor might want to start getting fitted for some Millionaires colors.”
Game One is set for tomorrow in Yorkton at 7:00 PM. You can catch the action live with Benny Walchuk on GX94!
