Ever had one of those days where you look fear straight in its beady little eyes and say, “Not today!”? Well, that was me at the Yorkton Parkland Outdoor Show and Expo this past weekend!
Picture this: my 7-year-old son, the pint-sized Indiana Jones, goes from cuddling a tarantula to befriending an iguana, and then casually cradling a smaller black snake. Just when I thought he’d reached his reptilian peak, he ups the ante with an African Ball Python. That’s right—he held it all!
Meanwhile, I’m over here breaking into a cold sweat. Why? Because snakes are my kryptonite! Even a stuffed snake can send me diving under the couch.
But when you’re a radio host, doing a show live on location, and Wrangler Elisa from The Adventure Wranglers Reptile Show comes up, you can’t really scream, “AHHHH, GET OUT OF HERE!” No, you “Radio Host” up and put her on the air!
And of course, I then have to hold the thing. As the python slithered into my hands, I summoned every ounce of mom courage. And guess what? I survived to tell the tale! Turns out, holding a snake isn’t so bad when you’re fueled by the sheer determination not to be outdone by your 7-year-old.
So, here’s to conquering fears, one snake at a time! Have you faced any of your own phobias thanks to your fearless kiddos?
