There will be a coroner’s inquest into the death of 20 year old Samwel Uko of Regina, whose body was recovered from Wascana Lake on May 21st.
On Thursday, the official opposition urged the government for an inquest, explaining that Uko had mental health issues and had gone to the Regina General Hospital twice that day looking for help, but was turned away.
Uko’s uncle, Justin Nyee, questions what you have to do to get help because it seems Uko did everything he could.
The date for the inquest hasn’t been set yet, because of safety precautions around COVID-19.
The NDP introduced a motion calling for a suicide prevention strategy, which was voted down today (Fri).
Meili says anywhere a bill like this has been introduced in Canada, it passes unanimously and this is the only time a suicide prevention strategy bill has been defeated in this country.
