Not good news for the Canadian Football League and its chances of salvaging a 2020 season.
The federal government has denied the CFL’s request for a $30-million interest-free loan.
The league would have used $20-million for player’s salaries, $8-million towards the hub-city of Winnipeg and $2-million as a contingency fund.
It’s been reported that Ottawa has directed the CFL to explore federal aid programs that help businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The season was supposed to start in June but was put on hold due to the pandemic and the targeted late-September start to an abbreviated season is approaching.
The league’s nine governors will meet on Monday to determine the fate of the 2020 season.
