Saskatchewan Government Developing Human Trafficking Laws Similar to Other Provinces

Many other provinces are working on human trafficking laws, and Saskatchewan’s government has announced it’s doing the same.

Justice Minister and Attorney General Don Morgan says they will be looking at a bill recently passed in Alberta, to see if they can develop something similar.

Alberta’s legislation enhances the legal options available to victims, and provides police with the powers to prevent and respond to human trafficking above what is provided in the federal Criminal Code.

Morgan says most people when they think of human trafficking think of women and girls being brought in from other countries, but in Canada and in Saskatchewan, it is usually young Indigenous women who are victims.

The government will work with legal advisors, police, and the community to identify opportunities and key issues that need to be taken into consideration.
