Grand Opening Held For New Teepee

The grand opening for the new teepee at Yorkton’s City Centre Park was held this afternoon.

Yorkton Tribal Council Chief Isabel O’Soup called it an emotional day, adding it was a moment of pride to see the new teepee.

Believed to be the first built in Saskatchewan, O’Soup was excited to be the first to construct something to represent Indigenous culture in Yorkton.

Mayor Mitch Hippsley called it a moment in history, adding it’s another step towards reconciliation with First Nations people.

The project was approved by Yorkton city council on June 20th, and the Yorkton Tribal Council covered the entire cost of project, which included relocating the sundial to the Yorkton Brick Mill.
