How Do You Get Your 3 Year Old to Put on Their Jacket!?

I remember this struggle with my 6 year old when he was the same age, and now it’s back again with my 3 year old. Each morning I say to them, “Kids go put your jackets on please, time to go to school.” 5 minutes later, the 6 year old is ready to go, the 3 year old, not so much. He’s hiding in the laundry room trying to scare me, rolling around on the floor, or just bugging his brother. The struggle is real! So, do you think the internet has any tips?

  1. Create a routine: Get your child dressed at the same time every day. It may not work like magic, but it’s worth a shot. (Yep, we do that)
  2. Give them choices: Let your little one pick between two jackets (that you secretly approve of). It’s all about making them feel like they’re in control. (That would add an extra 10 minutes of negotiating to our time)
  3. Turn it into a game: Pretend to be superheroes or animals while putting on the jacket. Who knows, maybe you’ll become the next Parent of the Year? (Then I can post a picture of how great of a parent I am on socials!)
  4. Lead by example: Show your child how cool you look in your winter gear. They’ll want to be just like you (or at least they’ll try). (Tried that, nope)
  5. Positive reinforcement: Praise and reward your child when they finally cooperate. A high-five or a treat might just do the trick. (Tried this, my kid doesn’t care)
  6. Allow extra time: Getting a three-year-old ready is like watching a sloth race. Plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to avoid any meltdowns (from you or your child). (20 minutes to get your jacket on should be enough time, right?) (Wrong!)
  7. Make the jacket accessible: Keep their jacket within arm’s reach. No need for a treasure hunt every time you step outside. (Check)
  8. Be patient and persistent: Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Stay calm, keep trying, and eventually, your child will put on their jacket without a fuss. (I guess when he turns 6 … maybe.)

The internet says by using these witty strategies, I’ll conquer the winter jacket battle like a parenting ninja. I don’t think the internet has kids. -Tonya Cherry-
