My First Time Watching Chicago: A Cinematic Revelation

Hey everyone! I just had to share my latest movie watch with you all.

So, recently one of the musical numbers from Chicago started trending on TikTok, and it got me thinking, why not watch the whole movie? I’d caught a few scenes before, but never sat down to fully enjoy it from start to finish. And let me tell you, I totally get why it won Best Picture now!

The song is actually a popular sound on TikTok right now, mostly used for edits for other shows and movies.

From the get-go, I was hooked. The film is a perfect mix of dazzling choreography, captivating performances, and a storyline that draws you in. No wonder it’s stood the test of time!

But let’s talk about the cast because wow, what a lineup! I knew going in that Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renée Zellweger were in it, but it seemed like every ten minutes I was getting pleasantly surprised with, “Hey, it’s that guy!”

The cast is packed with talent: Catherine Zeta-Jones is incredible as Velma Kelly. Her dance moves and stage presence are just mind-blowing. Renée Zellweger nails it as Roxie Hart, having a great balance of guilt, innocence and ambition. Taye Diggs brings his smooth charm as the bandleader, setting the perfect tone for the movie. Queen Latifah absolutely owns her role as Matron “Mama” Morton. Her voice and charisma light up every scene. John C. Reilly brings such a warm, heartfelt touch as Amos Hart. You can’t help but feel for the guy. Lucy Liu absolutely steals the screen for the short amount of time she is there. And then there’s THE Richard Gere, he’s amazing as lawyer Billy Flynn and he even did all his own tap dancing in the film!

Every musical number is like a visual and auditory treat, and they fit perfectly into the story. But what really struck me is how timeless Chicago feels. Even though it’s set in the 1920s and was released in the early 2000s, its whole theme of ambition, fame, and moral grey areas are so relevant today. Chicago could easily be remade in the current time period and it would still make sense. This movie just doesn’t age.

You can stream Chicago on Amazon Prime.

If you haven’t seen Chicago yet, seriously, you’re missing out. If you’re wanting to watch a musical for your next movie night, watch this movie—you won’t regret it! Until next time, keep enjoying great movies!
