Manitoba’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre is monitoring a weather system that could potentially bring 40-80mm of precipitation over this upcoming weekend.
In a news release, the province says while weather models don’t agree on the exact location, amount and timing of the system, there is confidence most of the central and southern Manitoba basins will receive between 40-50mm, with localized areas receiving up to 80mm by this Sunday (Apr. 24).
The head of Manitoba’s Emergency Management Organization, Johanu Botha, says they’re monitoring water levels to ensure the capacity is there to handle the system.
“The Manitoba Emergency Coordination Centre will remain activated to ensure a coordinated response, both for flood and the upcoming weather system,” Botha said.
Currently, there is moderate risk of flooding on the Assiniboine River, between the Shellmouth Dam and Portage la Prairie.
Fisaha Unduche with Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure says there is moderate-to-major risk of flooding for the Red River, moderate risk for the Pembina, Rouseau, Rat and Souris Rivers, moderate risk for the Whiteshell Lakes area, and low risk for northern Manitoba basins and Manitoba lakes.
